Krall herself is not only a fine singer, but a fine jazz pianist as well. I recently downloaded several songs from this album. Even the production work is very good -- no random crowd sounds which are often heard on live recordings. A truly fabulous collection -- possibly her best. Her voice is in great form, the songs move right along, her band is excellent. I play this music while I work, work out at the gym, walk outdoors, cook dinner. The perfect antidote to a gray winter's day in Chicago.
This album is worth getting even if you already have different versions of the same songs by Ms. As far as I know, this is the only album featuring Ms. Krall. Exceptionally good quality sound for a live album. Krall singing "A Case of You". Her version of that is extraordinary.
I forget where I discovered this amazing performer.but I am so glad I did. It is fun to listen to her own unique interpretation of some old jazzy standards. And her voice reminds me of being in a night club in the 40's (at least from what I can tell from the movies).
I think it has something to do with ambition, luck and excelling in the art of kiss & tell. I have to join those reviewers who have stated very accurately, she can not sing. She sings like she gargles mouthwash, maybe this is why she's married to a guy who sounds severely constipated. She can play jazz piano well and that's about it. I don't know why she's so popular. The tracks on this cd are uneven in recording quality - like they were cut from different sessions. I have lot of respect for Doug Sax who remastered this album accurately capturing the instruments but the vocal performances & arrangements are for the dogs who are all howling in protest.Previous reviewer justifiably compared her to Tony Benett as in seriously over-rated shouting as opposed to seriously over-rated gargling which never ends.
I hate to admit, but I have only recently started collecting Ms. Her style speaks for herself, and you can sense her sophistication in her renditions. Krall's albums. I have listened online to several of hers, though, and this is probably her finest. I am listening to it over and over. While I have other jazz albums, this ranks as one of my favorites.
